That is, until one fine day when those little bumps burst open and reveal the spring leaves and blossoms for which we’ve all been yearning. It’s as miraculous as a chick hatching out of its shell. It’s been a long hard winter, and everyone will be delighted to see the new green leaves bursting forth on the branches—the leaves of this spring, 2015. But when did the buds start incubating those baby leaves? Last spring, a full year ago. At the base of each and every leaf on each and every tree, a tiny speck formed. Those specks, beginning their growth in 2014, eventually become the leaves of 2015. [Read more]
Behn's Best for Landis -- Louise Polli
You are walking through the aisles of plants and shrubs at the spring plant sale. Color surrounds you: emerging pastel buds, bright green foliage, and the distinctive blue pots of Behn’s Best perennials. Joe Behn has been bringing a truck full of hardy, eye-catching perennial plants to Landis plant sales for the last 20 years, always including new and different varieties and well-loved sentimental favorites. They are hardy to our zone and climate, typically deer-resistant, and true to the name: Behn’s Best. Asked why he has participated in the Landis sales for so many years, Joe responded, simply: “It’s how I support the Arboretum.” [Read more]

In addition, we’ve just published our 2015 Calendar of Events, which is filled with family-friendly educational programs, star parties, tours, classes, and performances. “Silence is a beautiful thing,” Ann Bevins noted. “Sometimes people forget that quiet can change a person: it can make you somehow different.” Ann and her husband Shawn first visited the Arboretum after they moved back to their native Schoharie County from several years in Connecticut. They were building their home and followed the signs to the Arboretum’s plant sale. Since that first sale nearly 20 years ago, both Ann and Shawn have been plant sale stalwarts, Ann as cashier and Shawn as parking attendant.
