From the Director's Desk: Sustainability
-- Fred Breglia, Executive Director Like a healthy tree, Landis has been developing a strong root system, and like a tree with strong roots, the top growth becomes sustained. From the gardens and collections to our finances and programs, everything at Landis must be sustainable for long-term success. Therefore, sustainability is our mantra. Even during these tough financial times, when many not-for-profits find themselves in danger of closing, Landis has been able to survive – and to look forward to a healthy future. Realistically, money is what keeps the Arboretum growing. Grants have always been one of our top priorities, and grants have enabled us to sustain our mission. Successful grant applications have made it possible to maintain and expand our horticultural collections, trails, and buildings, and bring quality programs to our site. [Read more] |

Wildlife Rehabilitation: Saving the Wild Among Us -- Wilma Jozwiak
Shakespeare sat high above the bookshelves at the Barnes and Noble in Saratoga Springs, indifferent to the crowds as he turned his head around, and around, and around . . . because, you see, Shakespeare is a barred owl. As you can imagine, Shakespeare was drawing a lot of attention as wildlife rehabilitator Linda Brown talked about her avocation. Linda has been a rehabilitator for about seven years, starting when she had unexpected leisure between jobs. (Her first clients were squirrels.) [Read more]

In the Greenhouse: Propagation Afoot! -- Cindy King
While winter's white grips leafless trees, spring is already on the gardener’s horizon. An order has been placed with Johnny's Selected Seeds for the culinary herbs that will be showcased at our Spring 2015 Plant Sale! Classes on growing herbs and herb gardening, drying and preserving herbs, and cooking with herbs are in the planning stages. Volunteers will be needed to help with seeding, transplanting, labelling, and watering. We will also need more 3- and 4- inch plastic pots in April. To volunteer or for more information, call Cindy King at (518) 396-8563. From the Garden: Garden Club Meets to "Cuss and Discuss"
-- Erin Breglia, Landis Gardener Kicking off the first Landis Arboretum Garden Club gathering, ten enthusiastic gardeners came together on a beautiful autumn day to talk about their “hits and misses” of the 2014 garden season. Member and volunteer Jeanne Post-Sourmail and Board Vice President Wilma Jozwiak had issued an invitation to area gardeners for a lunch and gab-fest, drawing a very outspoken and environmentally conscious group. Before long we were happily eating the best ‘Dump Cake’ ever, washed down with apple cider. Our two-hour session quickly turned into three and a half! [Read more] Ever Green -- Anita Sanchez
The red, orange and gold leaves are gone, turned to crumpled brown paper. Now, in the dark days of winter, the evergreen trees come into their own. They've been there all along, of course, hidden by autumn’s lavish foliage. Their green shines brightly amid the bare branches. It was only a matter of minutes, but Anita Sanchez’s first encounter with the Arboretum proved to be a lasting one. Anita was working at the Five Rivers Environmental Education Center when she responded to a request for a wildflower talk from Fred Lape, the Arboretum’s founder. She was greeted by the elderly Lape and was immediately struck by his “great gentility” and “his Old World courtesy.” She knew that she was in the presence of a remarkable person – and a remarkable place only ten minutes from her newly acquired home. . Once again the seasons turn, and it will soon be time to renew your Landis Arboretum membership. The membership year runs from May 1 to April 30 of each year; renewals (or new memberships) received from the beginning of our membership drive in October will receive the remainder of the existing membership year plus the entire next membership year – in other words, join or renew now and be current through April 30, 2016. [Read more] The Golf Cart: Accessibility for All!
-- Wilma Jozwiak Those who visit the Arboretum know that it is not without its challenges. Hiking the trail to the Great Oak, rambling the Native Plant Trail, or climbing the hill from the Farmhouse to the Meeting House requires not a little bit of physical balance and stamina. Those who are debilitated from an injury or age may find that some of the loveliest places in the Arboretum are out of their reach. Enter the golf cart! Landis Board President Jim Paley was aware that Ed Miller, one of Landis’ “living treasures,” was finding it increasingly difficult to carry the water necessary to sustain new plantings along the Native Plant Trail he curates. Jim knew a person who might be willing to help: Dr. Russ Newkirk, an eminent pathologist in Albany. Dr. Newkirk graciously donated a golf cart to the Arboretum that has enabled Ed to add two new collections, ferns and mosses, to the Native Plant Trail. [Read more] |
