-Wilma Jozwiak & Lee Lattimer “Soothe a soul, mend a heart, bring together lives that have been torn apart, Share the joy, find a friend, It's a never ending gift that circles back again." These words from the song “Why We Sing” were offered by the Albany Gay Men’s Chorus as a simple explanation for the group’s existence. Certainly, their performance on Sunday, May 18th in the Landis Meeting House was a joyful gift. When longtime Landis volunteer Lee Lattimer suggested that his other passion, the Albany Gay Men’s Chorus, might perform in the newly renovated Meeting House, the stage was set for magic. Their skillfully blended voices soared to the rafters and took full advantage of the venue’s great acoustics. The group, in its sixth year, is directed by Christopher Clark and accompanied by Valerie Lord. Chris is in his second year with the AGMC, and clearly appreciates the members, both for their musical skills and for their individuality. The group fluctuates in number, but usually features 18 or more men. Founding member Terry Provost remembered how the idea for the group arose at a party in his backyard. Several guests were members of the mixed-gender Capital Pride Singers who wondered if there was a place in the community for an all-male group thatwould produce a different sound. From that party a group of 7 or 8 men came together, and that core group grew to 16 within the year. Peter Robins, first tenor, joined at the urging a chorus member who later became his fiancé. Peter echoed Michael Davis, another founding member, who remarked on the love of music that brings the group together and the strong sense of kinship that has become a hallmark of the group’s collaboration. Whether it is the result of the natural talent among the members or the group's commitment and easy camaraderie, the music they create is alternately invigorating and moving. Their harmony appeared effortless as they moved through a selection of show tunes from well-known musicals. Threaded through the performance were readings from the poetry of Landis founder Fred Lape, who surely would have been proud and enchanted to be in the audience. The AGMC performed to large and enthusiastic crowds on Saturday, June 21st in Albany and again on Sunday, June 22nd in Hudson. They will be performing again near Christmas – and if you enjoy terrific choral music, you will not want to miss them!
